The American Film Institute released a list of the top 100 comedies of all time. In this week’s FDL: two of our favorites. Both screwballs: Guy meets girl, fast-paced repartee ensues. Not familiar with the genre? Well, we’re about to give you a crash course. His Girl Friday sits at number 19 on AFI’s list and is a true classic. It stars the legendary Cary Grant as a newspaper editor upset that his ex-wife decides to marry someone bland. So, he decides to sabotage the whole thing. It’s witty. It’s cynical. It’s perfect. Our other favorite? Easily, My Man Godfrey (#44 on AFI’s list; among the few movies to receive 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). It’s a story about a socialite who hires a vagrant to be her family’s butler, only to fall in love with him. These incredible films have been lovingly preserved by archive.org. Enjoy.
